What Metallic Epoxy Floors Are
Metallic epoxy floors are a decorative system for homeowners and businesses in Columbia, SC who want concrete to look like polished stone, lava or a swirling liquid. Metallic pigment is mixed into clear epoxy, poured over a dark base and worked by hand while it is still wet. As the pigment settles, it creates depth, ripples and color shifts. No two floors look the same.
Where metallic floors make sense
- Bonus rooms and finished garages used as living space
- Home gyms and game rooms
- Home bars and entertaining spaces
- Salons, boutiques and small retail spaces
- Office lobbies and studios
Metallic finishes show scratches and grit more than flake floors, so we rarely suggest them for a garage where cars park every day.
How the look is built
After grinding and repair, we lay a base coat in a dark color. The metallic coat is poured in sections, then spread and moved with rollers, brushes or trowels to create the pattern you chose from samples. Some floors get a second metallic layer for more depth. A clear topcoat goes on last. For rooms with windows that get afternoon sun, we finish with a UV-stable topcoat, because HomeGuide rates standard epoxy poor to fair for UV resistance.
Prep matters more on a metallic floor
A thick, glossy floor shows every flaw under it. Cracks, ridges and patches can telegraph through. We grind the floor flat, fill cracks and joints and check for moisture. Slab moisture can cause bubbles or haze in a metallic coat. Columbia's average humidity of 70.2% through the year makes us cautious: we keep the room closed and conditioned during the install when possible, and we may use a moisture-tolerant primer. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30 to 50%, which is also a good range for a resin floor to cure in.
Color and pattern
We bring sample boards and photos to the estimate. Popular choices include gray and silver for a modern look, copper and bronze for warm rooms, and blue or green blends for gyms and studios. You can pick how bold the movement is, from soft clouding to strong veins.
Living with a metallic floor
Use felt pads under furniture, put mats at entries to catch grit, and dust-mop often. Clean with water and a mild cleaner. A glossy metallic floor can be slick when wet, so we can add a fine anti-slip additive to the topcoat in kitchens, bars and entries.
Slab only
We install metallic epoxy on concrete. Wood floors flex with humidity and can crack a rigid coating, and we do not pour over tile or vinyl.
What This Covers
A metallic floor is built in layers over flat, sound concrete.
Grinding and flattening
The slab is ground flat and patched so flaws do not show through.
Base coat
A dark tinted base that gives the metallic layer depth.
Metallic pour
Pigmented epoxy poured and worked by hand into your pattern.
Clear topcoat
A clear coat for wear, with UV-stable and anti-slip options.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
Bob Vila puts metallic epoxy at about $5 to $12 per square foot. Floor flattening, crack repair and extra layers raise the total, so we price from a visit.
Is metallic epoxy good for a garage?
It can be used, but it shows scratches and grit more than a flake floor. We usually suggest it for rooms with lighter traffic.
Will a metallic floor be slippery?
The gloss can be slick when wet. We can add an anti-slip additive to the topcoat in kitchens, bars and entries.
Can I choose the exact pattern?
You choose colors and the style of movement, and we follow it, but every pour flows a little differently. That variation is part of the look.
